ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

Tomato Collection Guide >>

Some quick notes about tomatoes:

Most options are “indeterminate” (Indet.) varieties, which means the plant will continue growing and producing all summer. These plants need a good strong trellis or cage to keep them healthy. If labeled “determinate,” (Det.) the plant will grow to about 3 feet tall and will need only a small cage or stake to keep them upright. Determinate tomatoes will produce a certain amount of tomatoes each year and tend to flower and ripen in a shorter window of time. “Semi-determinate” varieties fall somewhere between these two varieties. They tend to be taller than determinate/bush varieties but not as sprawling as indeterminate.

Our selections of cherry tomatoes are generally large plants that need a strong supportive cage or trellis. They tend to be very productive and are great for snacking, summer salads, roasting, and drying. They also tend to be more tolerant of part shade and cool temperatures and are more disease resistant than many slicing and paste tomato varieties. They will stay healthy even if you never prune them once. 1-3 plants is generally sufficient for a small family.

Paste tomatoes have less juice and seeds and are more meaty, making them ideal for making tomato sauce or paste. The varieties we offer at this time are all indeterminate and will continue to grow and produce all summer. They are somewhat susceptible to late blight and other diseases but will be productive and healthy if they have enough airflow — space them 24″-30″ apart and trellis well. Pruning helps too! We’ll be reaching out in June with some great learning resources!

Slicing tomatoes are juicy and sweet and are most often used in salads, sandwiches, sauces, or just simply served with a little sea salt and basil! We offer several red and several colorful varieties. In general orange and yellow tomatoes are significantly sweeter and less acidic than other colors. Purple tomatoes tend to have a bit of a “smoky” flavor. Green (when ripe) tomatoes have a bright, complex flavor that is both acidic and sweet.

H. = Heirloom (old variety passed down for generations)

O.P. = Open-Pollinated (newer variety that will grow true from saved-seed)

F1 = Hybrid (newer variety that is a result of breeding; may not grow true the next year from saved-seed)
